For this month, we are doing Fanart Friday short stories based on fanart. You can see this month’s video below but here we’ve included each individual story. A big foxy thanks to everyone who got involved, we got a great mix of ideas to produce different tones and styles to each story. Next month’s Fanart Friday is a free choice- we just want to see your pics of the Reynard City heroes (email firstname.lastname@example.org to find out more or use the contact form)
We start off with a guest contributor to our fanart short stories. AM Petrie provided an interesting original character for AK Girl to face off against…
Sample text: Suddenly, Vibes clutched her head and grimaced. Mei-Lin knew from experience that this meant Vibes would be running off to yet another emergency.
“Sorry Mei, gotta go!”
Vibes dashed out of the shop. Mei-Lin waited five minutes, dropped the basket load of clothes she was holding and followed her friend out. She pulled out a small metal box. The green display showed a moving dot.
Or rather, AK Girl – Vibes’s alter ego.
It hadn’t been coincidence that had led to the two women meeting that night. It was in fact the result of several months of covert reconnaissance on the part of Mei-Lin.
As she followed the tracking device to AK Girl’s location, Mei-Lin transformed into her own super form – Shadow Stalker. Now as a lean stoat, Mei-Lin activated her skintight stealth suit allowing her to seamlessly blend into her surroundings.
This story is set on the planet Animal Kingdom before Vibes arrives in Reynard City and is seen from the perspective of Mara, who is disillusioned by the rebellion against the heroes…
Sample text: For one fox, AK Girl did not represent hope. There was a time when Mara believed in good. She wanted to take down the gangster overlord Dante Rodriguez, to be the hero that AK Girl now was.
But Mara did not have that moment. She did not have the powers that AK Girl had. So when she fought off Dante’s minions, she would eventually be over-run. While she was brave, it resulted in her getting a distinct scar across her eye.
It should have been me, growled Mara, unsure if she was saying it out loud or not. The bar was the place she went to drown her sorrows, to try and mute the anger in her head.
Vibes wants to enjoy a relaxing day on the beach but as per usual a villain has to interrupt…
Sample text: “Behold your new nemesis” came the bold statement “for I am Slick, the two dimensional flat feline!”
Vibes groaned. She looked up to see a white cat in a pink swimsuit. Now was not the time for this, she thought.
“I was really hoping I didn’t have to do this” she muttered, before focusing and transforming into a swimsuit version of the AK Girl costume.
The Insect Girl can’t help it (Pic by GreyofPTA, OC by Van Hikari)
A little Easter Egg with this one- one of my Dad’s fave films is The Girl Can’t Help It, hence the name. GreyofPTA is an excellent artist and Van Hikari has been one of our most loyal supporters. With this story, we get a glimpse into the mind of Insect Girl, a former secretary turned hench operative and her intense crush, as well as a side to AK Girl you don’t always see…
Sample text: “Hi Sweetie” giggled Insect Girl.
“Not today, I’m not in the mood” snarled Van.
“Trouble in paradise?” Insect Girl quipped back.
“None of your business.” Insect Girl tried not to laugh, Van’s face seemed abundantly clear that he really didn’t want to engage in banter or play around.
Van transformed into his fox form, firing dark bolts of energy that Insect Girl swerved and dodged.
“My, my, we really do have our grumpy trousers on today, don’t we?” laughed Insect Girl.
“Leave me alone!”
“You heard what the man said.”
Insect Girl groaned. What a shocker, there was AK Girl, right on time to spoil the fun.
“Back off Foxy McLeatherpants”
AK Girl glared at her. “He said leave him alone. STRENGTH MODE!”
OK this one was a bit of a challenge. Now, I must admit I don’t know the cartoon Braceface, aside from the fact that Alicia Silverstone voiced the main character and the odd review of certain episodes. If you want to know more about this cartoon I recommend a great video by ToonrfficTariq that goes into more depth (warning- may not be suitable for younger viewers)
The issue I had when writing was that Braceface is a grounded cartoon and I was trying to think how this would mesh with the zaniness of Reynard City. But then I remembered the whole magical braces angle and that helped…
Sample text: She went to touch one of the bars but was stopped.
“Trust me, you don’t want to touch those” said a voice.
Sharon turned around, startled.
She looked across to see another cell. Next to her, the voice was coming from… a fox? But this was no normal fox. She was dressed in a red and black costume with an AK insignia on it.
“Hi I’m Animal Kingdom Girl, AK Girl for short and I am the future saviour of the universe.”
Sharon was baffled. It was already a lot to take in, but to top it all off she just heard someone call themselves the future saviour of the universe but saying it super casually, as if she was handing out business cards at a networking event.
Kendall Collins is a very talented writer and artists. He has produced a series called Life By The Tracks which is a more grounded anthro series. However, one cool idea he had was essentially the idea of the Reynard City heroes being celebrities in his universe and there have been some crossovers.
Pri is an adorable character and I love her passion and energy. So with this particular contribution to the Fanart Friday short story collection, I liked the idea of her having these fan theories before meeting Vibes for real. If you haven’t already I do recommend checking out Kendall’s work, it’s a great anthro universe!
Sample text: Like any fan, Pri had her theories on AK Girl. It was exciting- while the fictional superheroes out there were cool and all, here was someone who was an actual superhero. But then, Pri had also been working on another theory.
Somehow, Reynard City DJ Vibes McAllister seemed to have odd parallels with AK Girl. She always seemed to coincidentally be around near the time when this mysterious hero showed up and then was nowhere to be found when the action got going.
Then there was the “allergy” incident, the infamous low point of Vibes McAllister’s career. Some had speculated that this was a cover, that Vibes was actually a monstrous diva and the whole thing was a stunt to ward off bad press.
Others had pointed out how Vibes’ behaviour had become more erratic up to that point, saying strange words and seeming blanking out at random. Naturally, more than one outlet had suggested that Vibes was on something stronger than morning coffee.
The problem for Pri was that this was not an easy thing to talk about. She knew that once she got going then everything would pour out and that people would tune out, going to talk about something else.
John Paul Guerra has been an incredible contributor to the Reynard City project- As well as regularly producing videos of our original webcomics on the Reynard City comics channel, he also established our roleplay forum and has produced some fantastic fanfic and fanart.
This concept was a fun idea- Millie Myx is a multi-dimensional being who has a very “warped” sense of humour…
Sample text: “FEAR ME FOOLISH MORTALS, GAZE UPON THE AWESOME POWER FROM BEYOND THE FIFTH DIMENSION!”
As the pink smoke cleared, what remained was a small girl. Or at least, what appeared to be a small girl from a 50’s comic, with her ginger hair, freckles and cheeky grin. But this was also coupled with outsized gloves and shoes.
“Who are you?”
The giggling stopped. “Hi, pleased to meet you, I’m Mildred Myx, but my friends call me Millie.”
Sal tried to stay calm. “Okay…Millie…why exactly did you turn the bank into a trifle?”
Millie snorted. “Take a look around you, love! These silly people were pointing guns at people just to get at bits of paper…and they call me crazy!”
John also does story commissions (incidentally these are available alongside our comics via our Ko-Fi page). This one is for regular supporter Van Hikari, in which Sal uncovers a bizarre attack on her friends…
Sample text: Vibes finished her snack before looking over at her friend. “Oh that. Ah y’know. Had
some heroing to do, and you were still asleep so me and G decided to give you a break and take
care of it ourselves!”
Sally raised an eyebrow in curiosity. “That’s awfully thoughtful of you but you really
should’ve just woke me up. You and Guillermo… Wait, where’s Guillermo?” Vibes pointed a
thumb towards the bedrooms as she reached over and grabbed a soda. “He’s sleeping. Felt like
he needed it after the beatdown we gave those baddies we went after.” Sally let out a sigh as
she walked over to Vibes. “Well that’s good. But now’s not the time for kicking back. Anty
wanted me to bring you guy to his place, ASAP.”
Vibes scratched her head as she looked over to her friend. “Ehhh… Maybe after this
show is over.” Sally groaned as she grabbed Vibes’ arm. “When Anty says “ASAP”, he means it
Vibes! Now get your butt off that couch and come with me!” Sally pulled and tugged her arm,
but Vibes remained planted on the couch. “Nuh Uh. I’m staying right here and I’m gonna enjoy
my weekend whether you like it or not!”
Last but definitely not least is Peppy by Timemaster1320. Weirdly enough this was the first picture we got but I’ve been going through in the order on Deviantart, funny how that works. This one took me a minute as I had to work out a story about the villain Caramel Girl with a penguin lamp called Peppy. As I worked it out the story kind of took a weird turn…
It was a lampshade, well half lampshade, half cute penguin in a suit. Caramel Girl couldn’t explain it, but she was drawn to it, magnestised by it. She gazed at the item, poring over it like it was a work of incredible art.
“There…there’s something about this.” She said, in an almost hypnotic monotone.
Now it was Insect Girl’s turn to be cynical. “Umm we got what we came for Janice. Shouldn’t we be…you know…getting away?”
“Sure….just a sec…” Caramel Girl said, not even acknowledging Janice.
She noticed there was a switch for the light. Not surprising really, given that was the point of a lamp. As she switched it on, the bank around them grew dark but a dazzling array of light shot out. The light slipped and tripped, becoming animated and forming into a range of shapes.
First it was a chariot being pulled along by horses. Then the light became a warrior battling a minotaur. Next it was two lovers embracing in the moonlight.
“We call him…Peppy” One of the tellers said in a similar tone to Caramel Girl. “He’s…”
“…Wonderful” Caramel Girl interrupted.
A big foxy thank you to everyone who gave us pictures for these Fanart Friday short stories. However it doesn’t end there, we also need to give a shoutout to Stevenafc11 who submitted these pics (we just had time to add them to the video)
Check out more awesome Fanart Friday art in our playlist below, as well as a special shoutout to all the fantastic people who make this comic happen (and before you ask big update on Reynard City Chronicles issue 4 coming soon!)
