Thanks to a Facebook post, I now know last week was the Reynard City 12th anniversary. This is a project that is very special to me, but also it could only happen due to some awesome people. This is a quick overview of how it all began, what it’s all about and where we go from here.
How it all began
When talking about the Reynard City 12th anniversary it should be made clear that the idea existed before the comic. While playing Sonic round a friend’s house, I saw the speed and colour and found it inspiring. However, the idea was initially restricted to doodles and notes.
It was only with the Arwz (Alternative Reality Writers Zone) forum that the characters began to mould into their counterparts- Vibes (AK Girl) became the cheeky superhero who couldn’t resist taking centre stage in a battle, while Sal (Wondervixen) and Guillermo (Hyper Rob) were a bit more reserved.
As you can see, the initial style of the webcomics changed over time (we’ll get to that). It was very much a trial and error process, as different people came on board and put their input in. In order to understand just how many, here is our art team video!
We have been lucky to have people collaborate behind the scenes- For example David Reynolds, Tim Lince and most recently Visualise have all worked on the website, while John Paul Guerra founded the roleplay forum contributed some fantastic fanart and makes the videos for our comic Youtube channel!
Learning from mistakes
While the Reynard City 12th anniversary is a celebration, it is also about learning from mistakes and developing from the process. For example, I learnt early on that I cannot do lettering and it was better to leave that to artists!
We also changed the process in terms of working with artists- Working with one or two is a lot easier than trying to keep various teams working on different issues together.
Below is a sample of a few of my fave webcomic images, feel free to comment and tell us yours!
Reynard City Chronicles
Speaking of the process, over the course of the Reynard City 12th anniversary there have been issues with artists not being able to complete issues, having to replace mid issue and so forth.
This is why we decided to change things up with Reynard City Chronicles Issue 1. Instead of 22 page issues over the course of the year (We never did manage the overly ambitious bi-monthly approach), we now offer one 40 page graphic novel per year.
We decided to go with Nicholas Webb and Strider Syd for the first issue, due to the incredible work they did on various issues, sprite art etc.
To celebrate the Reynard City 12th anniversary, we are offering digital copies of Reynard City Chronicles for $1.20 via our Paypal link (we then email them to you.) Please get your copy for a couple of reasons- 1. It’s a great comic 2. It helps support artists like Nicholas and Syd.
While the Reynard City 12th anniversary is about celebrating the past, it is also about the present and looking to the future. Joe Draco Petterson is currently working hard on Reynard City Chronicles Issue 2, due for release in time for London MCM (We’ll be there 25-27th October!)
Here is a little preview to whet your appetite!
Special thanks to everyone that supports us
There are so many great people that make Reynard City happen. We are lucky to have artists, cosplayers, actors, crowdfunders and sponsors, all of who make all of this possible. This literally can’t happen without you!
