Gail D’Almaine runs D’Almaine Photography, a member of Norwich Kitty and also supported us at our stand at Norcon, so today we wanted to do an interview to find out more about her photography work and the story behind it.

How did you get into photography?

I studied photography as part of a graphic design diploma, I’ve always loved making images. In my job as designer/art director, I’ve worked with many great photographers and I decided to go pro when my daughter was little as the job is flexible and fun.

You took some great photos of Raye as Wondervixen at Norcon (see more on our cosplay page). How do you approach taking photos at an event?

Wait for something to happen – or nudge it! I’d love to photograph Raye as Wondervixen in a dramatic style with strobes, on location if I can ever get her to stay in one place for long enough!

What is your favourite type of photography?

Simple, symmetrical, bold portraits, I love black and white – remember Frank Miller’s Sin City with its dramatic light shaping. Strong portraits.

What are your creative influences?

Dorothea Lange and her powerful black and white images, My Neighbor Totoro by Hayao Miyazaki for the emotional wonder, Jane Hope Bown CBE for her photographs in black and white, using available light.

If you could have anyone on your superhero team who would you have?

The original Catwoman (Eartha Kitt), Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr Strange (bring the cape!), Vanessa Carlysle – Copycat Girl – and her boyfriend, Deadpool – there would always be chimichangas!

What tips do you have for aspiring photographers?

Make images every day. Find what makes you feel good and do more of it. Experiment!

Is there anything you’d like to add?

Cameras are tools, like pen, stylus and graphic pad. They are a means to expression and storytelling. Without imagination and the courage to make stories, these things are nothing. Be brave. Tell your story.
