I know nothing about superheroes or graphic novels. Seriously, I’d be hard-pressed to name ten if my life depended on it. But I did love the cartoon Thundercats as a kid (‘Feel the magic, hear the roar, Thundercats are loose!’) so when I stumbled across Reynard City Chronicles thanks to a friend, it was a very welcome nostalgic experience.

“The lead character is Vibes, an extremely foxy fox who sounds a lot like me (‘Her weakness: one blast of caramel and she becomes a massive hot air balloon!’) Her parents were killed by thugs, and the plot of webcomic #1 reveals how she becomes a superhero called AK Girl.

The graphics are amazingly slick and easy on the eye. Sometimes I think I can draw, and then I look at something like this manga-style comic, and think: who am I kidding? The narrative is also really fast-paced and exciting.”

As an artist, it is a joy to working with scripts that are so full of energy and limitless imagination. The scope flits effortlessly from exterior to interior worlds, from macro to mahoosive scale and the archetype of the superhero character is explored in a very contemporary way; through the lens of mental health. After reading the very first issue of Reynard City, I was blown away by the story!

The main character, Veronica aka, Vibes is a very down to earth, in your face character. I love her snarkiness, and her attitude. She reminds me allot of my girlfriend.

I do love her alter ego, AK Girl, and her abilities, plus I do like her back story, and her friends and allies.

So I advise you all to please check out Reynard City comics, by my friend Rob Turner, his comics are worth reading!

Being a fan of superheroes and comics like many people, they had formed a large part of my childhood and continue to be a big part of it today, through TV series’, films and weekly comic books. Various favourites come to mind; Spiderman, Batman, X-Men to name a few. After sitting down to read Reynard City with great anticipation towards its release, I can safely say with full confidence that I can add Reynard City to this list of greats as well.

A large reason why I felt so drawn in was due to the characters and world that the comic established throughout. We gain a bit of insight into each of our heroes lives, both past and present, learning their backstories and motivations and seeking to know more about them and where their paths may go with each page that is turned. They all have lives which they live, goals they wish to strive towards and struggles which push them to become better, all of which bring in a sense of relatability, allowing us to sympathise with and support these characters to succeed.

The world presented is equally as rich and intriguing, with both its own quirky take on our world, and hints of where our heroes originate from sprinkled throughout and masterfully developed, giving the reader plenty of opportunity to become immersed within the characters world as if it were their own, whilst keeping enough hidden to provide a sense of mystery that encourages us to imagine and develop our own interpretations of this exciting new world we are presented.
The art style implemented throughout also helps to complement the story and characters further, making each scene whether action focused, comedic or heartfelt burst with personality. It has often been compared to something one might see on a Saturday morning cartoon and I would whole-heartedly agree with that statement. A TV adaptation sporting the same style the comic uses in both its art and writing is something I would definitely be in favour of.

Its safe to say reading this has now got me hooked on the series and I look forward to seeing how it develops in future stories. It is clear that an immense amount of passion and creativity has gone into the production of this comic and it thoroughly deserves a place amongst anyone’s collection who has a love for superheroes, comics or good quality fun. Congratulations on everyone involved in the making of this comic and I wish you all the best of luck in the future.

This webcomic has been a labour of love for the awesome guys who have worked tirelessly to bring it to life – and it shows. The attention to detail and story telling is well thought out, providing the reader with not only top notch graphics but a narrative that draws you in every bit as much. Proof that you should never give up on your dreams – RC just keeps evolving into bigger and better. Congratulations to everybody who has been a part of the team – I can’t wait to see where the story takes us next!

So, what is Reynard City? I would say its a beautifully constructed world with characters who embody the spirit of what it means to be human. As humans, we all have faults and weakness and yet we have our strengths, the same goes for the characters in Reynard City. The characters all have their own vulnerabilities but in spite of those they get up to keep fighting to the good fight.

The design of the characters and world look unlike any comic that has come before. It is unique and special while at the same time adding to the overall feel of the plot line.

How about the story? Is it good? I would say this story has something for everyone. It has humor, it has charm, it has action and heart. It has everything all the best comics have and that’s a mixture of emotions that can grab a reader and pull them into the world of the comic. It will keep you hooked and wanting to know what happens next. It is very much the same as a Saturday morning cartoon but in a good way because Reynard City Chronicles brings back that child in all of us.

The real heart of this story and comic could not have been made without the brilliant artists and writer behind it. The art is as magnificent as the story itself and deserves a lot of praise in this world.The writer of the comic has amazing insights into his characters and the world which allows the story to become even more than just a simple comic. I highly recommend giving Reynard City Chronicles a chance because it is an adventure waiting to be explored in.

Reynard City Chronicle #1 Review

Sometimes you browse across the Internet and an image passes you by that catches your interest. An image that makes you think “What’s all that about?” For me it was the fan-art image of a ballooned-up anthropomorphic fox girl in a superhero outfit and I had no idea who she was. Fortunately the writer and producer of the Reynard City comics, Rob Turner, was kind enough to send me a copy of the first issue of Reynard City Chronicles to bring me up to speed.

Reynard City Chronicles #1 tells the story of Vibes (aka Veronica, but she hates being called that) having dreams of fighting, superpowers and anthropomorphic animals. Until it turns out that her dream visions are actually real. It turns out that Vibes is AK Girl with a wide range of superpowers that she uses to fight the bad guys. And she has a fox-man friend called Guillermo who also kicks serious butt. And there’s another female fox called WonderVixen that kicks serious butt AND CAN FLY! And there’s an evil mecha-fox bad guy called MEGA FOX who is really evil and conniving. But before all that, the heroes fight a group of bad guys called Caramel Girl And The Bakery Boys, who fight with pastry, pie and sweets related weaponry. Oh also, if AK Girl touches caramel she becomes bloated and inflates like a balloon.

Seriously, all this is what happens in this first issue of Reynard City Chronicles.

The first thing that caught my attention was the art style, provided by artists Nicholas Webb and Strider Syd. It reminded me of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics of the late 80s and 90s (and the comic book acknowledges this influence on the back page). They both have similar art styles yet Reynard City Chronicles’ style also has been influenced by anime (the big ol’ anime eyes). The art is colourful, bold and the action is impactful. Lovely.

The writing style and storytelling is dripping with stylish, 90s attitude. The main characters have a strong sense of coolness as they effortless beat on the bad guys whilst exchanging witty remarks. It reminds me of the Joss Whedon style of writing from classic shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer. No wait, the storytelling is more akin to the Saturday morning cartoons that were shown on TV in the 90s. And the creators of this comic wear this fact and style with pride.

With all these great ingredients combined, there is one thing that I had a problem with Reynard City Chronicles. I feel the pacing is too fast and I struggled to keep up with what was going on. There is a lot of story that is squeezed into one issue. First it’s a story about a girl in therapy, the next page we learn that she’s a DJ, the next page it’s revealed that she is a superpowered fox with superpowers, the next page she has superpowered fox friends, the next page is the big bad guy Mega Fox, and so on. While this might be a slight exaggeration, this illustrates how fast I think the comic’s pacing is. I was left thinking “Wait, what’s happening now? She can do this now? Who’s that guy? Oh she can also fly because of course she can” and so on.

I was left feeling that I had missed something. So much so that I went to the website https://reynardcitychronicles.com to see if I had actually missed something. On the website there is the backlog history of the Reynard City story and on the website I learnt more about each of the characters. I also learnt that Reynard City Chronicles is a reboot of the comic series.

I think for me as someone that’s completely new to this comic book universe, it would have been good if things were slowed down a bit. Take its time. Dedicate a good chunk of the comic to develop and play with how Vibes is feeling when she is confronted with the real possibility that her dreams might be real. Give her time to discover all her powers instead of having an explanation in one panel. This would mean that the story would spill across multiple issues, but this would have given me a chance to learn and love these characters as much as the creators of the comic clearly do.

However seeing as this is a reboot of an existing franchise, I can imagine that fans of Reynard City would be frustrated with this idea of dragging out the retelling of a story that they already know. Who knows, maybe I’m too old for this fast-paced storytelling.

Ultimately Reynard City Chronicles lives up to its tagline “A Saturday morning cartoon in webcomic form”. Fast, colourful, and it has fox characters that are dripping with attitude. But if it had slowed down the pace a bit and allowed me to get to know everyone better, the experience would have been more fulfilling.
