What is Reynard City?

What is Reynard City? It’s a question I was asked on a Discord server (thanks Kurt!) On the surface a simple question but there’s a few points to it.

First of all, one of the best answers to “What is Reynard City?” is John Paul Guerra’s (Happy birthday John at time of writing!) original intro video

The plot

The plot on the surface is fairly simple- three superhero foxes (AK Girl, Wondervixen,Hyper Rob) come to Earth to stop an evil robot fox (Mega Fox) They are aided by a former radio station manager (Mark), alternative therapist Dr Anty and grouchy mechanic/inventor Rotecol.

Mega Fox has gathered his own forces including the mercurial dimension manipulator Warp King, embittered former caterer Caramel Girl, the ditzy but deadly Insect Girl and many more.

When talking about “What is Reynard City?” It is not just about the action- it is also about what goes on behind it. Vibes deals with mental health issues not just because of her psychic powers but also as she has to come to terms with what she has to do. Sal wrestles with guilt that manifests in her body perception issues, something that is tied with real life issues that people have to deal with.

Of course, when thinking about 90s cartoons, people remember the great superhero cartoons like X-Men or Batman the Animated series while also remembering quirky fun shows like Animaniacs or Earthworm Jim with the original Ninja Turtles somewhere in the middle. What is Reynard City? Reynard City takes elements of all of these as you’ll see in our comics playlist below.

Originally we created a webcomic series which is still available in the archive section of this site.

We then developed this into our graphic novel series Reynard City Chronicles, building on some ideas from that series with an intent to finishing the story we started (something we are in the process of doing!)

The community

Finally, when answering “What is Reynard City?” It is about more than the characters or the action. Another question I’m regularly asked is “Do you do the art yourself?”
