Memes are a lot of fun and a particular favourite of mine are memes from The Simpsons, a show that I have been known to quote on a regular basis, and provides me day-to-day joy. Before anyone says it, yes I know it is not as good now, but let’s be honest you try writing a show for 30 odd years and being consistently brilliant.
So when I saw throughout the week that artist Elie Renard Delisle-Lafortune was posting Simpsons referencing Reynard City memes I was very happy. I will posting them below, with details of episode context (not precise episodes but enough so you get the idea. And if you’re not sure, look up the details and I’m sure you’ll find it).
This one is from an episode whose title is the Spanish for ‘The Mysterious Voyage of Homer’, where Homer questions if Marge is really his soulmate. It’s a classic setup/punchline gag, and I love it. Also I am aware this resulted in one of the worst goofs in the comic!
OK this joke is not particularly clever. This is from the episode where Homer buys a mobile home and the dialogue goes thus:
Bart: I call this bunk!
Lisa: Bart, that’s a bread compartment.
Bart: You’re a bread compartment!
For whatever reason, that never fails to make me laugh. It’s silly I know but sometimes we need a bit of that.
This one is from the Treehouse of Horror, where the devil in Ned Flanders form (“It’s always the one you least suspect!”) tempts Homer with a doughnut in exchange for his soul. Homer then realises if he doesn’t eat the whole thing the deal’s off, prompting this moment…
Homer (childish singing): I’m smarter than the Devil, I’m smarter than the Devil.
*Furious, the devil emerges in a monstrous form*
Devil: YOU ARE NOT SMARTER THAN ME!
Of course, the Simpsons is not the only thing to get the meme treatment, and indeed any show, movie, current event or anything at all can be referenced. So as a bonus here are a couple more Reynard City pop culture memes!
