How did you first get into art?
As soon as I could hold a crayon I was drawing! In fact my mum said to me that as a toddler I would not eat my lunch unless there was a notepad and pencil beside me.
What is the theme behind the exhibition?
The Portraits are fourteen intense pencil and pen portraits. Each one exemplifies a different tonal or mark-making technique. So much more than a photograph … the marks tell their own story …
What are your influences?
I am an illustrator too so I take inspiration from the careers of John Vernon Lord and Chris Riddell. My main influences are film, more silent cinema and classical Hollywood than contemporary; the Victorian era, Cyberpunk and big cats!

Are there any tips you’d like to share for aspiring artists?
If you feel it in your gut and heart that producing something out of a creative process is all you want to do, all day, everyday, then you are an artist! There are so many amazing career options, fashion, photography, graphics, ceramics and so on … I did a variety of jobs before I followed my heart. Graphic design was my entry into the creative industry and when you do what you love you become successful. Adaptability is great – one day I am a fine artist, the next day I am an illustrator – explore multiple paths and you will see how one informs the other.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
For the last two years I have been painting an annual self portrait. I would love to exhibit a series of self portraits and see how my style and face has changed over the years. It would have to be a Norfolk-based exhibition because this is the county that made me!
If you could have anyone on your superhero team who would it be (I’ll allow Lara Croft, Sherlock Holmes, James Bond etc)
Superman, because it would make international travel so much easier if I had a friend who could fly me everywhere!
