For those who missed last week’s video I joined up with Inspired Youth and a number of other businesses to judge an event at Hellesdon High School where the students pitched ideas for businesses. I had a great time looking at the ideas they came up with and was impressed with the energy and enthusiasm of the students.

This week was another event called “Mini Cogs” that took place at Sewell Park Academy. I was one of a number of businesses joining Inspired Youth. The first part involved talking to a group about the comic. However it was not just a plug for Reynard City- we also talked about the range of jobs that can take place within the comic industry.
For example even with the comic team you have pencillers creating images, inkers to create depth and emphasise those images, colourists who add the colours and letterers for the various captions and sound effects (although a lot of the time we work with artists who did this on their own or in pairs to keep things simple!)
Other comic industry jobs include cosplay promotion, running comic book stores and we also touched on promotion through websites and social media. I also briefly discussed my background with this- growing up my Dad ran his own business from a trade counter opposite our house, so we learned fairly early on about how business works.
What impressed me was how engaged the kids were- it wasn’t always easy but when they got going they showed off their creative skills and were happy to really show off what the comic was about and how it tied in with promotion, employment etc. I was really impressed with their attention to detail (including a foldaway image of how to draw eyes added in) and how they presented the art in a colourful and stylish way.

Overall I had a great time and I want to thank Inspired Youth and the other businesses (Xpose Web Design, BigDaddy PR, Epic Chair Covers and Sugar Buttons) for this opportunity. For me I think it’s important to emphasise that the opportunities are out there and it was great to see some really creative kids showing off their skills!
