With Christmas around the corner, we wanted to talk about gift ideas. Partially this is because we are going to be at the Castle Quarter this Saturday and Sunday (16th and 17th November 2019, but also because if possible I want to help with a few different gift ideas you may not have thought of.

General tips

1. Start early- Yes people moan about this but if you can this will help spread the cost.
2. Budget ideas- Charity shops and second hand places can be great places to pick up bargains.
3. The thought that counts- This does not mean “You remembered to get a present”. However much you spend try to think what people want.
4. Use what you’ve got- If you’re like me and rubbish with giftwrapping reuse boxes and get gift bags as much as possible, or give gift vouchers (though check to see if it’s the kind of thing they like such as cinema vouchers, cafes etc).
5. Personalised items often help, such a gift basket of food they like or something tailored to their particular interests (eg fave football team, cooking etc).

Local companies

As part of Norwich Kitty networking, I’ve learned more about the importance of supporting local business. Equally, I think there is something special when you can offer something that you can’t find elsewhere.

Here’s a quick run down of a few faves-

– As well as selling a certain fox based superhero comic, this is a great place for buying kid’s books, young adult fiction and also has a nice little cafe area.

Canary Comics– Outside of our own site, the best seller of our comic. They support local artists like Ben Allen, as well as being a great source of comics, merchandise and toys (ideal for stocking fillers or for someone with a love of a particular comic).

D’Almaine Photography– Great photographer, a photoshoot can be a special present for a couple or family, plus her own award-winning work looks fantastic.

Allykats Photography– Best known for pet photography, but also great for headshots and family photos too!

Meditation PT– Know someone who needs to wind down? A few meditation sessions can make a massive difference (I should know I’ve done it and Peter does a great job!)

Local eateries – Super shoutout to the lovely folk at That Cafe, Last Pub Standing, Figbar, Muffin Break, Gin Temple, all fantastic places (If you know somewhere people like to go, surprise them with a coffee or a drink credit!)

Tastebud Wines- Want to get someone a nice wine but don’t know where to start? Talk to Steve Hearnden.

Writers

I am biased as a writer, but I do feel books are a good gift at Christmas as reading should be encouraged in a positive way, not just as something to be studied. For more awesome writers check out #WritingCommunity on Twitter.

Artist commissions and craft work

We’ve mentioned a couple already, I recommend looking up #CreativeBizHour to find some of the incredible creative talent offering unique items for people who appreciate fine craftwork!

It is also worth commissioning artists, as they can create something unique. Also by going to a company you can put them on mugs, T-shirts, coasters etc so they have a physical gift as well.
