This week’s spotlight is Caramel Girl and Insect Girl or as I like to call them the female equivalent of Rocksteady and Bebop (and I apologise in advance for putting that mental image in your head)
The Story:
Caramel Girl’s real name is Janice- she was originally a caterer and her passion for pies earned her the nickname “Caramel Girl”. Unfortunately when a DJ accidentally choked on a pie she and her team The Bakery Boys lost her job. Now some people would decide that this would be a good time to talk career options. However Caramel Girl decided to steal an experimental caramel blaster and get revenge.
After a bungled attempt to destroy a nightclub she was arrested. Mega Fox broke into the jail and released Caramel Girl but for a very specific reason (It’s in Issue 10, can’t go into more details-SPOILERS)
However Mega Fox is suspicious of her motives. So when a secretary gets a bit too curious (again this is spoiler territory, see Issue 12 for this) she is transformed into Insect Girl, who has various insect related powers (flight, cocoon, stinger)
Influences:
Like I said before there is a kind of classic double act with Insect Girl and Caramel Girl- in effect Caramel Girl is the one who thinks she’s the smart one, Insect Girl is the less bright one (although she is prone to getting the odd jab in, mostly about Caramel Girl’s lack of powers!)
There is a slight real life element to Caramel Girl- I have struggled with getting jobs in the past, so there is an element of that frustration in her character. What is interesting is that when voicing the animated version of the character Taraneh Jaranpour gave her a more Brixton style accent, something I wouldn’t have thought of but really fitted the nature of the character.
Meanwhile with the video game Insect Girl was voiced by Heather Cockerill who gave her an Essex accent and she excelled at the banter with the characters. In both cases this has influenced how I will write the characters as it added a different spin I previously didn’t think of!
Also while we’re here big thanks to Kirsty Swan, Jed Soriano and Dan Butcher who were all crucial in terms of developing the visual style of the characters!
