What is Captain Zero?
Xerxes Hughes aspires to be a superhero. But while he appears to be a typical cocky young superhero he struggles with anxiety and depression (personified by a depression demon voiced by legendary Gargoyles, Princess and the Frog et al Keith David!)
Visually I think Captain Zero is stunning. It personally reminds me of The Animatrix in terms of the anime style look with a dynamic action style. What this additionally brings to the table is smart social commentary.
Talking with Z-Cher Aime the passion is obvious. People often misinterpret “write what you know” as only telling grounded stories. But the advantage of using a genre like the superhero story is that you can use heightened images to get at a deeper truth.
Themes
Captain Zero not only visually depicts mental health struggles very well but also looks at societal issues. The depiction of conflict with the media and authorities is very resonant and topical.
Action
It should also be stressed that Captain Zero has plenty of action to go with the character development. The action is well paced and the animation shows it off wonderfully.
